HAPPY NEW BEERS New Beers to Try in 2017

As the great American beer Renaissance enters another year, it is the perfect time to survey the field for new entries to add to the bucket list. This year is going to be a good one, with heavy hitters like New Belgium, Left Hand and Founders already announcing new brews for us all to enjoy. So as you are setting goals for the New Year, don’t forget the most important goal of all: try some delicious, new beers. You’ll thank me when the golden elixir of the gods hits your lips.

New Belgium Voodoo Ranger
This one is already on the shelves, and it cannot be recommended highly enough. Take all the glorious, hoppy goodness of New Belgium’s Ranger IPA and add a little bit of spice to it. Flavorful enough to satisfy the manliest pallet, yet drinkable enough to enjoy on a warm sunny day, this spiced IPA begs for a second round…and maybe a third.

Left Hand Braveheart Nitro Scottish Ale
This May, Left Hand promises to deliver all the glory of Mel Gibson charging into battle wielding a six-foot long broadsword screaming, “Freedom!” As the newest addition to the Nitro series, the beer will be imbued with nitrogen for a smoother pour and taste (think Guinness on tap). Instead of a stout, though, you are getting a ruddy Scottish ale. William Wallace would be proud.

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout
Founders Brewery has finally solved the age-old conundrum faced by men around the world: should I have a beer or bourbon for breakfast? Well, now you can have both. Founders Breakfast Stout was already one of the best beers on the market (and a personal favorite, in full disclosure). Aging it in the woody goodness of bourbon barrels just seems like the next logical step. Warning: this beer may imbue the drinker with a superhuman level of manliness. It releases in April 2017, so mark your calendar accordingly.

Heavy Seas The Alpha Effect
Maryland-based Heavy Seas Brewery never disappoints and this new seasonal release should certainly be worth a try. The Alpha Effect is a so-called “hazy” IPA in the New England style. Juicy citrus notes will be the backbone of the ridiculously hopped profile. At 7% ABV, this brew is a category 5 ready to make landfall this March.

Summit Unchained 24: Spring Saison
Summit Brewery represents the peak of the St. Paul brewing mountain. In a region known for quality beer, this brewery stands above the rest. The secret to their success is their skilled brewers and the unchained series gives these craftsmen the license to get a little weird. This March, beer patrons will get to enjoy the work of James Birnie with his Unchained 24: Spring Saison. This traditional Belgian-style Saison should be perfect for ushering in the spring with a cold, crisp brewski.

Boulevard Tough Kitty Milk Stout
Since 1989, this Kansas City Brewery has been bottling good times and great flavors for the thirsty American public. For 2017, the brewery is offering several new beers, including a brand new seasonal to come out in September. The Tough Kitty Milk Stout promises to be a deliciously dark new experience from the people who gave you the top tier Dark Truth Stout. Expect the Tough Kitty to be smoother and lighter while retaining the signature full body of a Boulevard stout.

Highland Southern Sixer IPA
Asheville North Carolina is the East Coast Mecca for American beer lovers, and Highland Brewing makes the town proud. Keeping with this southern tradition, the Southern Sixer IPA will be a new seasonal release already in stores. The beer contains six varieties of hops, each named after a peak in the Appalachian Mountains. This big, burly brew should be bolded on the beer lover’s bucket list.

Terrapin Easy Gose
If you have never tried a Gose, 2017 should be the year you do. These sour, salty beers originated in 16th century Goslar, Germany and they are a bit far out compared to a typical American Lager. Terrapin’s Easy Gose is brewed in the traditional style with a little bit of grapefruit peel thrown into the mix. Coming out in April, this promises to be a fantastic spring beer coming from a brewery known to mix things up in the best kind of way.
