THE COMMERCIAL BOWL The Top 12 Big Game Ads

The Big Game. The Sunday of Sundays. The Pigskin Showdown. Whatever you want to call it, it is the single most important day in a sports fan’s life. For 4 hours or so, we can forget about our troubles and fill ourselves with massive doses of football, beer and fatty foods. You’d be hard pressed to find a better combo…But, if we are being honest, there is another aspect of Super Bowl Sunday that many us tuning in are looking forward to: the commercials. It is estimated that out of the 110+ million people that watch the game, over 50% watch solely to see what ads big companies can churn out with their million dollar budgets. Some fail horribly and some are so unforgettable that they are woven into our memories and everyday life.

Behold ManScore’s Top 12 Greatest Super Bowl Commercials:

12. Hyundai – “First Date” (2016)
It is hard to find a more likable comedian in the last 5 years than Kevin Hart, and he doesn’t disappoint in Hyundai’s 2016 commercial. Showing off their new “car tracking” technology, the car commercial shows a paranoid dad following around his daughter on her first date with a new guy. The situational comedy is laugh out loud funny and the premise is one that all dads can relate to. Now, if only they could make a car we all wanted to buy…

11. Pepsi – “Your Cheating Heart” (1996)
It’s not easy to take a country ballad like Hank William’s “Your Cheatin Heart” and use it for comedic purposes but Pepsi did just that and did it flawlessly. Sometimes the simplest premise is the most effective and this commercial proved that while only using a single shot. Pepsi showed us that memorable advertising doesn’t need to be flashy or complex and there is no doubt that this is an ad that will be remembered for a long time.

10. Budweiser – “Wassup” (1999)
While this may be the most annoying Super Bowl commercial ever, it surely earns its spot on our list for its influence on popular culture. After the ad aired in 1999, people everywhere started replacing the standard “hello” with the over exaggerated “wassup” seen in the commercial. School, work, the gym; you couldn’t escape its wrath. Influencing culture is quite a feat, but I think we are all glad that the effects were short lived.

9. Pepsi – “New Look. Same Great Taste” (1992)
“It’s beau-ti-ful.” The red-hatted kid at the end of this iconic commercial summed it up perfectly. America’s 90s crush, Cindy Crawford, simply lit up the screen and I doubt any man looked away from their television sets when this one premiered in 1992.

8. McDonald’s – “The Showdown” (1993)
Nothing says 1993 like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird in the McDonald’s classic, “The Showdown.” There is just something comical about two Dream Team Olympic gold medalists engaged in an insane shooting battle...over a BigMac. “Nothing but net” quickly became an everyday phrase and the commercial will forever go down in history as one of the greatest sports commercials of all time.

7. Budweiser – “Lost Dog” (2015)
Every best Super Bowl commercial list needs at least one of Budweiser’s “Best Buds” ads. The relationship between a dog, some Clydesdales and their owner has nothing to do with beer, but who wants to drink a Budweiser anyways? The commercial is perfectly crafted and will spark emotion in even the manliest of men.

6. Reebok – “Office Linebacker” (2003)
Arguably, the top laugh-out-loud commercial on our list, “Office Linebacker” featured Terry Tate bringing his football motivational skills to an everyday office. Within the first ten seconds, Tate lays out a co-worker who was taking too long of a break and hilarity ensues. The rib-tickling commercial sparked an entire series of videos so make sure to check them out all over YouTube.

5. Coca-Cola – “Mean Joe Greene” (1979)
4x Super Bowl champion, 10x Pro Bowl player and 1979s NFL Man of the Year; this is Mean Joe Greene. One of the greatest to ever play defensive line, Joe Greene is oddly not remembered for his football skills but for his role in this 1979 Coca-Cola ad. It tugs on the heart strings a little bit and is about as memorable a commercial as they come. (For a good laugh, check out Family Guy’s parody of the commercial in the episode “Peter, Peter, Caviar Eater”)

4. Budweiser – “Frogs” (1995)
You just gotta watch this one. It is weirdly hilarious and you will never say the name of this beer the same way again.

3. Snickers – “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” (2010)
One of the cleverest ad campaigns in the last decade, Snicker’s “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” got off to a belt-busting start with their 2010 ad. We all get a little “hangry” from time to time but none compare to this guy who turns in to Betty White when he hasn’t had his sustenance. I dare you not to laugh as she gets tackled and thrown down into a mud puddle.

2. Volkswagen – “The Force” (2011)
Everyone remembers the first time they watched this commercial and everyone remembers the uncontrollable smile they had when the cute kid in the Darth Vader costume finally used the force. After the big game, the ad went viral and could be seen on morning shows and Facebook feeds all over the world. Volkswagen’s 2011 Super Bowl commercial is the epitome of what makes an ad memorable and is much deserving of its #2 spot on our list.

1. Old Spice – “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” (2010)
Old Spice’s 2010 commercial is the crème de la crème of Super Bowl ads. From witty, faced paced humor, sweet computer effects and a memorable tag line, you’d be hard pressed to find a more likable advertisement. “I’m on a horse.” Genius.
