THE BEST JAMES BOND MOVIES In Memory of Sir Roger Moore

No movies encompass the genre of guy movie better than the James Bond series. Fast cars, tuxedos, beautiful women, gadgets, gambling, martinis: everything we love is here. 24 movies in 55 years, and 007 is still ever changing and staying relevant. While they are all enjoyable, here’s ManScore’s top 6 James Bond films to watch this weekend.

6. Casino Royale (2006)
Casino Royale introduced us to the new era of 007 and an entirely new type of Bond portrayed by Daniel Craig. After the debacle that was Die Another Day in 2002, the series was due for a change. The film ditched the super-villain in an ice castle trying to start a nuclear war with a giant sun laser and instead focused on an actual realistic plot. What ensued was a smart, suspenseful espionage film that finally took the series to new heights. Also, who doesn’t love a good poker slow roll?

5. GoldenEye (1995)
Unlike his later movies, Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye was a masterpiece. Just like Casino Royale, this film brought Bond into a more modern space. From a witty, smooth Brosnan to the famous exploding pen, this one had everything. It also spawned one of the best video games ever made, so that’s something.

4. Goldfinger (1964)
When you think of Bond, you think of Sean Connery. In the first blockbuster of the series, Connery shines and arguably gives his finest performance as 007. Director Guy Hamilton slows down the pace and lets the story breathe, allowing for a buildup to one of the top endings in the series. Most importantly, Goldfinger introduced us to the Aston Martin DB5, the ultimate movie car ever shown on screen.

3. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Growing up, Roger Moore was always my favorite Bond. He was just so full of class, perfectly accompanied by his witty banter and British charm. The Spy Who Loved Me is Moore at his best, and truly one of the all-time great spy films. If you watch only one Bond movie this weekend, make it this one. Sir Roger Moore will be missed, but his legacy will live on.

2. Dr. No (1962)
The first and one of the best instalments of the series. Connery’s first introduction as Bond is so suave and smooth, and helped shape the character into someone we’ve come to know and love. Spawning the 1960s “secret agent” genre, the film was unique, original and a perfect adaptation of Ian Fleming’s novels. It’s full of gripping sequences, one-liners and everything we have come to expect out of 007.

1. Skyfall (2012)
Director Sam Mendes hit pure cinematic gold with the 23rd film in the Bond collection. Skyfall stays true to its roots, but gives us a movie that strays from the trite nonsense that often comes with the genre. Javier Bardem is this generation’s bad guy and his performance is chilling. What sets this film apart from its predecessors is its focus on Bond’s story, as we dive deep into his past. 007 is vulnerable and we are presented with a more human Bond, one who we might relate to more than past portrayals. Full of action, humor, incredible cinematography, and the famous DB5, Skyfall is THE ultimate James Bond movie and one that must be watched at least once.
