NON-ALCOHOLIC AUTUMNAL DRINKS TO MAKE  For the Sober October Guys!

I love a good holiday cocktail. While I would love to say that this list was inspired by my desire to write something for all the non-drinkers out there, that isn’t quite true. These beverages are just amazing seasonal drinks by themselves—that happen to also be non-alcoholic—and I thought they deserved their own article.

Pumpkin Spice Latte
Look I get it—I make fun of them too! I have lily white sisters who I love to ridicule for their taste in pumpkin spice lattes. The thing is…pumpkin spice lattes aren’t all bad. I used to really enjoy them. Starbucks may have taken the drink a little too far in terms of literal sweetness and marketing, but did you know they actually invented the drink? Sure, people had been mixing in all sorts of things into their lattes for quite some time but Starbucks was the first in 2003 to set out to find a drink in which they could incorporate pumpkins.

Chai Latte
Chai tea, known through much of the world as Masala chai, is a black tea brewed with a mix of Indian spices and herbs, including cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, peppercorn, cloves. The western world tends to use a fair amount of allspice as well. The beverage first came to prominence when the British began running tea plantations in 19th century India and began marketing the drinks to locals. It eventually took off, and is now an entirely Indian drink. The chai latte that we westerners often know is a unique blend of the Masala chai with sweetened milk to give us that cozy feeling we so often crave in the Fall.

Golden Milk
I wasn’t hip enough to know about this originally; my girlfriend turned me onto it. Golden milk is a dairy-free, but oh so creamy hot drink that is a perfect new adventure for autumn. There are a variety of recipes online and most of them feature some combination of coconut milk and almond milk for a base, plus some coconut oil, a little bit of maple syrup (to taste), and then the magic ingredient: turmeric. My hipster and hippie friends swear by turmeric for all its lauded, healing properties, but one thing I do know: this concoction tastes good.

Hot Apple Cider
Apple Cider is the king of autumn in all of its many forms. You can heat it up, drink it cold, get it made fresh, or simmer it over a stove with cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. You really can’t go wrong, however you decide to do it. This drink is truly one of my top reasons for loving the Fall.

Hot Chocolate
As a diehard black coffee drinker, I tend to think of hot chocolate as being too sweet. But the reality is, it isn’t. There are so many varieties of hot chocolate—milk hot chocolate, dark hot chocolate, hot chocolate made from fresh ingredients, hot chocolate made from that tasty Nestle powder, hot chocolate with marshmallows—this list never ends. I recommend pairing your hot chocolate drinking with some buttered popcorn for light snacking. The combo is truly remarkable.

Sparkling Apple Tea
Of all the seasonal beverages out there, this is the only chilled beverage to make the cut. It’s a refreshing, yet seasonally appropriate alternative to all the cozy drinks I’ve featured. To make it, steep two black tea bags in 16oz of water with cinnamon sticks for around 15 minutes. Then remove the tea bags and chill the tea. Once chilled, mix the tea with 25oz of sparkling apple juice and some lemon juice. Serve it over ice and garnish it with a cinnamon stick and enjoy.
