For the purposes of this article, I’m assuming you’ve already outfitted your kitchen with the basic supplies every adult male needs: cutlery, plates, bowls, mugs, pans etc. But now we’re talking about those specific utilities that go beyond the basics and allow you to cook a whole host of new dishes while enjoying the splendor of your kitchen.

Magic Bullet

We begin with the Magic Bullet—the staple of early morning broadcast television commercials. I’d never thought twice until about them until my father impulsively bought one when my siblings and I were kids. He was so excited about it and I’m fairly certain we ridiculed him until we saw all the incredible things it could do. For the uninitiated, the Magic Bullet is essentially a personalized blender that allows you to easily mix and match containers so that you can blend foods easily in small batches. The individualized containers detach and can be used as cups in their own right if you wish. Not only that, but the Magic Bullet also works as a food processor and juicer. I’ve even used it as a coffee grinder on more than one occasion. Which brings me to my next point.

Coffee Grinder

What’re you doing out there with that pre-ground coffee? If you’re already doing the work to brew coffee at home you might as well go the rest of the way and buy yourself some quality beans. Pre-ground coffee is notorious for losing its freshness and flavor while whole bean coffee beans keep their aromas locked inside until the moment you grind them. Another big bonus of having a coffee grinder is that most of them will allow you to select how fine of a grind you would like with each batch, allowing you to brew coffee in a variety of ways (finer grounds for espresso and very coarse for a French press). I think everyone knows that there are few things more dangerous than dull knives (especially as compared to sharp knives), but still we all seem to tolerate dull knives anyway. I’m guessing it’s some sort of complacency with the status quo but there’s nothing like feeling the clean, swift cut of a truly sharp blade to get you jonesing for a quality knife sharpener. Sure some places will sharpen them for you, but you should have one yourself.

Everybody loves waffles. A good waffle breakfast is the perfect way to make sure that everyone starts their day off right. Not to mention, making a bunch of different types of waffles can be a wonderfully fun brunch date. Look for a non-stick waffle maker (they have those now) and check out how long they take to cook per waffle (many of them can cook one in under a minute and a half). Make as many as you want, freeze whatever leftovers you happen to have left, and simply pop them in the toaster when you’re on the go. They’ll still taste just as good.

A rice cooker is one of the harder appliances to convince yourself to buy if only because it only serves one function: cooking rice. But here’s the thing—it cooks excellent rice perfectly, every time. A rice cooker takes the guesswork out of this part of your meal prep, and greatly simplifies the kitchen experience for men who aren’t interested in spending more time cooking food each night than they have to. If you’re on any sort of diet (other than a ketogenic diet), you’re probably going to be cooking a lot of brown rice or other grains, so I’d highly recommend looking into one of these bad boys.
